Registration
in New Zealand for nurses from overseas

General information
Nurses who are registered with an overseas regulatory
authority can apply to the Nursing Council of New Zealand ('the
Council') for registration. Applications are assessed on an individual
basis and in accordance with the requirements of the Health Practitioners
Competence Assurance Act 2003. The Council only operates a
system of reciprocal registration with Australia (except Western
Australia). Applicants for registration are required
to provide evidence that:

they have an equivalent
international nursing qualification
·
are competent to practise
within their scope of practice
·
are fit for registration,
which includes the ability to communicate effectively in English
for the purpose of practising nursing.
The
time it takes for an application to be completed varies considerably.
The Nursing Council of New Zealand strongly recommends that you
do NOT make plans to move to New Zealand until you have completed
the registration process. (if necessary). Please also note that immigration does
not come under the jurisdiction of the Nursing Council of New Zealand.
English language requirements
The Nursing Council of New Zealand
will usually require overseas applicants to demonstrate their ability
to communicate in and comprehend English. Applicants will be notified
whether they must provide evidence of their ability to communicate
in and comprehend English after their applications have been assessed.
The Council will accept any of the
following as evidence:
a)
an academic IELTS assessment with a minimum score of 7.0 for each
band: reading, listening, writing and speaking, OR
b)
the Occupational English Test (OET) with a B band in each section.
The Council had formerly accepted a pass in the Commission
of Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS), but this will not
be accepted for assessments requested after 27 April 2006.
Applicants from Australia (not including
Western Australia)
Applicants with nursing registration in the Australian
Capital Territory, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, Queensland,
South Australia and the Northern Territory can apply to the Nursing
Council of New Zealand for registration under the Trans-Tasman Mutual
Recognition Act 1997.
Applicants from the rest of the world (including
Western Australia)
