NUS Bachelor of Science (Nursing) Programme
– Frequently Asked Questions
1. How
long is the Nursing Degree course?
The Bachelor of Science (Nursing) is a 3 year course.
Students who have performed well throughout the course would
be offered the opportunity to proceed to the Honours year leading to Bachelor of Science
(Nursing) (Honours).
2.
Can
nursing diploma graduates apply to the NUS Nursing degree course? Will I get exemptions for my subjects
taken in the polytechnics?
Yes. There will be exemptions
for the subjects taken in the polytechnics. The extent of advanced
standing for diploma holders from a local polytechnic will be reviewed
and granted in accordance with NUS rules and regulations.
3. What
are the admission requirements for entry into the Nursing Degree
course? Are there any pre-requisites for entry into the Nursing
Degree course?
Admission of candidates into the programme will be
based on academic merit. Applicants need to present their Singapore–Cambridge
GCE ‘A’ level certificate; or a diploma from a polytechnic in Singapore;
or equivalent international qualifications.
Subject pre-requisites: a pass in any two of the following
subjects at ‘A’ level: biology,
chemistry, computing, physics, physical science, either mathematics
or further mathematics.
Short-listed candidates will have to attend an interview
between April and May. Performance
at the interview will contribute to the selection process.
Health Status: In accordance with Ministry of Health requirements, candidates
who test positive for Hepatitis
B surface antigen are not eligible for the Nursing Programme
in Singapore, regardless of their Hepatitis B e-antigen status.
4. Does
this course accept mature students?
Yes. Anyone who has met the admission requirements
can apply.
5.
If I have a degree from other disciplines, can I get
exemptions or advance standing as well?
Yes, this is possible on a case-by-case basis.
6.
What
is the expected student intake for this course?
The programme will commence in August 2006 with an
intake of 50 students. There are plans to expand the intake in the
future.
7. Are
there any sponsorships available for this course?
Both public health care clusters
(SingHealth and National Healthcare Group) will offer outstanding
‘A’ level students sponsorships for further studies in the Bachelor
of Science (Nursing) at the Alice Lee Centre of Nursing Studies.
Career prospects
8.What’s
the difference in career prospects for an honours graduate and non-honours
graduate?
Honours graduates will have completed an additional
year in research, management and clinical subjects which will facilitate
their career development. In addition, there will be exemptions
for selected subjects in the Master of Nursing Programme offered
by NUS.
Many of these graduates will go on to complete doctoral
degrees where they will conduct research and develop new nursing
knowledge and evidence-based nursing practice.
9. What
are the career tracks available for me to pursue in the Nursing
career?
The NUS Bachelor of Science
(Nursing) degree provides a major step for a career in professional
nursing. It aims to prepare nurses for a broader role in the delivery
of a vast array of health care services.
Graduates can apply for registration as
Registered Nurses with the Singapore Nursing Board. Professional
registration leads to a diverse and exciting range of employment
opportunities in hospitals, community health, long-term care facilities
such as rehabilitation centres and nursing
homes, and research institutes.
