New Language Test
for Non-EU applications for Registration

With effect from 1st
March, 2005, An Bord Altranais is introducing an alternative
option for Applicants who are required to meet the standard
for English Language Competence. Up to this time the only test
of English language competence accepted was the International
English Language Testing System (IELTS).
From 1st March, 2005, Applicants may now
either provide evidence of English Language Competence through
completion of the International
English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Applicants
may provide evidence of English Language Competence through
completion of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), together
with the Test of Written English
(TWE) and the Test of Spoken
English (TSE). A Test Report Form must be submitted to
An Bord Altranais direct from the Test Centre where the Applicant
undertook the test. The applicant must nominate An Bord Altranais
as a recipient for test results with their Test Centre. Only
Test Report Forms that have been forwarded by the Test Centre
directly to An Bord Altranais will be accepted. The test must
have been undertaken no more than two years prior to the date
of application or the Applicant must provide evidence of having
worked as a full time nurse in an English-speaking environment
since having completed the test. This will be assessed on an
individual basis. Applicants who have commenced the registration
application process prior to 1st March, 2005, may
opt to complete either English language Competence option.
If the Applicant chooses to undertake the TOEFL/TWE/TSE
English Language Competence option, evidence of competence through
achievement of the following scores must be provided:-
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
Applicant may undertake either the Paper Based (PB) TOEFL or the Computer
Based (CB) TOEFL.

Test of Written English (TWE)
The TWE is only required as a separate test result if the Applicant undertakes
the Computer based TOEFL test. The TWE is already required for
everyone taking the Paper based TOEFL test.

Test of Spoken English (TSE)
Test of Spoken English (TSE) Score Requirement:- 50
